Charlotte Owensby and Cori “Coco” Gauff blast there way into the semifinals of the 12′s Junior Orange Bowl!

December 21st, 2015

One thing is for certain……..Sly Black and his team of elite coaches have worked with dozens of world and national champion tennis players. When compared to the well-known “big-box” tennis academies, Sly Black’s Academy only has a fraction of the students those big places have. How is it possible that for more than a decade Sly has produced several of the finest junior and professional tennis players?  Perhaps the success comes from a mixture of Sly’s keen eye for building champions, certainly one of the best supporting coaching staffs in the business, and a privatized family setting.  Several of the coaches at Sly Black Tennis including Otis Johnson, Gerard Loglo, and Annalise Rose have been Davis Cup/Fed Cup players and have even been coaches, hitters, and travelling coaches for top 100 players on the WTA and/or ATP tours.

The last Orange Bowl 12 and under world champion from Sly Black High Performance Tennis was Sly Black’s Daughter…..Hurricane “Tyra” Black in 2013. Sly Black and Hurricane Black are shown below:

This is our group of young developing players!

September 15th, 2015

Shown below is our young group of up and comers and some coaches. They are all developing and some of them are quite accomplished already!  (This was the day that we commended Charlotte Owensby and Cori Gauff for their representation of Sly black tennis and the United States. They were the United States 12 and under world champion team and beat the likes of France, Russia, and several other powerhouse teams. Also pictured here and commended for his efforts is 13 year old Ronan Jachunk who recently won a gold and silver ball at supernationals and also won an ITF tournament  (Quite rare for a 13 year old and we are only aware of one other american who has done that over the past decade) Other quite notable players here include nationally ranked Sydney Hua, Sarah Hua, Juliette Finch, Little Mo 8′s singles and doubles champion Kristina Despotouli and several others!!!

Sydney Hua takes the Level 6 14′s Title!

August 24th, 2015

12 year old Sydney Hua “The Tiger” is an offensive dynamo. She is not very tall, but is known to regularly smack winners past older and bigger girls. For the past few months, she has been working on her defensive skills. Throughout the tournament Sydney used excellent footwork and defensive skills to neutralize points. Of course, Sydney was able to use her awesome offense to finish several points quickly.  Sydney “The Tiger” took the title at the level 6 Boca Raton TLC Showdown!  Several players from the Sly Black Tennis Academy came out to support her during her matches. Everyone is very proud of how Sydney is developing as a player. Great win Sydney!!!

13 year old Ronan Jachuck had an awesome 14′s supernational showing (won a gold and a silver ball). Then he took a week to train with us prior to participating in the Trinidad ITF World Event. All of the coaches felt that Ronan was in good form prior to leaving for the event and was certainly capable of winning a couple of matches, but we were a bit surprised when Roshan (Ronan’s father) contacted us every single day with news of another win. This is an 18 and under ITF/ world event with several world ranked players participating. We knew that Ronan could play some seriously good tennis, but when we learned that he took the title it was a really good feeling. It is quite rare for a 13 year old boy to win an ITF event. Amazing job Ronan!

As an aside: Roshan Jachunk (Ronan’s father) has been an incredible travelling coach for Ronan. Initially we considered having a travelling coach for him. Now, we may just have to send other players with Roshan!  He has done an incredible job with Ronan’s preperation and management during the tournaments.

USA Girls 12′s World Team Champs With Happy Coaches

August 24th, 2015

Charlotte Owensby (12) and Cori Gauff (11) represented their country and won the wold 12 and under team championship held in Quebec, Canada. It is highly unusual for both team members to train at the same academy and/or train with the same coaches.  Sly Black and all the coaches, parents, and players from Sly Black tennis were extremely excited  and proud of the girls when they clinched the title.   Both of the girls have been part of Sly Black High Performance tennis for approximately (4) years.
