Hurricane “Tyra” Black Sweeps back to back Grade 4 ITF Events!

April 22nd, 2015

In a two week period, Tyra won two Grade 4 international events Yes, she was the champion in  Barbados and then won the event in Trinidad. She beat top seeds during the early rounds of those tournaments. Fortunately for the seeds, they will not have to face Tyra during the early rounds anymore because she will be seeded. Those wins gave Tyra a bunch of good points and a nice world ranking!

Meible Chi is a only 15 years old but as of April 1, she is ranked #35 nationally in the USTA 18′s division. Meible had a great March 2015 and had some terrific wins on her way to a semifinalist showing at the USTA Claremont ITF Event. She was the doubles winner (with Taylor Russo) and singles finalist at the USTA National selection tournament. During the tournament she had significant wins over the #15, #21, and #28 players in the country.  Awesome stuff Meible!!!

Sydney and Sarah Hua

April 7th, 2015

Sly Black Tennis is extremely proud of  these hard working sisters. Sydney is only 13 years old and crushes the ball, while Sarah is 15 and uses delicate dropshots, lobs, and spins to frustrate and eventually demoralize her opponents. Their levels have gone up quite a bit since coming down from the Washington DC area (Maryland) to join Sly Black tennis about a year ago. They took home first place hardware for the 14′s and 16′s divisions of a USTA Florida sanctioned tournament this past weekend. They are now preparing for some high level national tournaments that they will both be participating in later this year.

Hurricane “Tyra” Black wins Barbados ITF Event!

April 7th, 2015

Hurricane “Tyra” made her dad (Sly) and everyone at Sly Black tennis extremely proud of her outstanding win in Barbados. It was an ITF Grade 4 tournament that is open to all 18 and under players. This is quite an accomplishment for someone who just turned 14 years old! Awesome job!!!

Check out the results of Barbados: http://www.itftennis.com/juniors/tournaments/tournament/info.aspx?tournamentid=1100033533

Hurricane was not too pleased with her luck of drawing the #2 seed in the first round of Barbados, but she won the match 6-2 6-3.  Without any rest from Barbados, she went on to the ITF Trinidad tournament and unfortunately drew the highly ranked #1 seed who is 17 years old. Much to everyone’s surprise, Hurricane literally blew her away with a 6-1 6-1.  Maybe they should stop having all of these seeded players go up against Tyra so early in the tournament???  That tournament is still going on and you can check out the scorelines at http://www.itftennis.com/juniors/tournaments/tournament/info.aspx?tournamentid=1100033600

Cori Gauff represents Sly Black Tennis and Head at Tennis Day!

March 22nd, 2015

Cori “Coco” Gauff has been on fire.  Last  year as a 10 year old she made history by winning the Girl’s 12 and under supernational tournament. She also won a 14′s national tournament as a 10 year old! Then she took third place at the 2014 Junior Orange Bowl 12′s tournament and become only the second 10 year old in tournament history to make it to the semifinals.  The last time this happened was by a girl by the name of Jennifer Capriati 28 years ago!

Cori was chosen to represent Head tennis and Sly Black tennis in the prestigious tennis day event at Madison Square Garden. She had an opportunity to show off her tennis skills and then hang out with Roger Federer, Grigor Dimitrov, Monica Seles, and Gabriella Sabatini.   Needless to say, everyone at Sly Black tennis is extremely proud of Cori.
